1

Arrival – Negombo

Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport. Private transfer to Negombo for a gentle coastal first night close to the airport. Evening lagoon walk, seafood dinner or early rest after the flight. Overnight in Negombo.

Negombo to Anuradhapura

Negombo to Anuradhapura, approximately 3.5 hrs. Travel north through dry-zone countryside toward Sri Lanka’s first ancient capital. Afternoon guided introduction to Anuradhapura Sacred City, including Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba and selected monastic ruins. Sunset walk near an ancient reservoir. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura – Deep Heritage Day

Anuradhapura deep heritage day. Explore Anuradhapura by bicycle, tuk tuk or guided vehicle depending on preference. Visit Abhayagiri Monastery, Thuparama, Isurumuniya Rock Temple and ancient irrigation landscapes. Afternoon local lunch or slow village interaction. Evening at leisure in a quiet heritage-style stay. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura to Wilpattu

Anuradhapura to Wilpattu, approximately 1.5 hrs. Short transfer toward Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka’s largest and most atmospheric safari landscape. Afternoon jeep safari through villu lakes, dry forest and open scrub in search of leopards, elephants, sloth bears, deer and waterbirds. From November to January, confirm park access and road conditions in advance as monsoon rain can make tracks rough. Overnight near Wilpattu in a safari lodge or tented camp.

Wilpattu to Sigiriya

Wilpattu to Sigiriya, approximately 3 hrs. Optional early morning second safari for wildlife lovers. If doing the second safari, depart Wilpattu by 10am to arrive Sigiriya by around 1pm. Continue southeast toward Sigiriya through rural landscapes. Arrive at a boutique nature resort and enjoy the evening at leisure with optional Ayurveda massage or lakeside sunset. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Sigiriya – Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa

Sigiriya rock fortress and Polonnaruwa. Sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress with a specialist heritage guide. Afternoon excursion to Polonnaruwa Ancient City for Gal Vihara, royal palace ruins, Vatadage and ancient reservoir views. This is a long day; depart Polonnaruwa by 5pm to return to Sigiriya by around 6.30pm and offer a guided vehicle tour instead of cycling for older travellers. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla

Sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla, approximately 3 hrs. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple en route, with its painted ceilings, Buddha statues and devotional cave shrines. Continue through Matale spice country toward Kandy. Evening visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Overnight in Kandy.

Kandy to Hatton – Tea Country

Kandy to Hatton, approximately 3 hrs. Morning visit to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens or local craft workshops. Continue into deeper tea country toward Hatton, passing estate roads, waterfalls and colonial tea landscapes. Afternoon estate walk, tea tasting and quiet bungalow-style evening. For peak UK winter travel, Tea Trails-style colonial bungalows should be booked 8 to 10 weeks ahead where required. Overnight in Hatton or tea country.

Horton Plains Highland Excursion

Horton Plains highland excursion. 6am departure is mandatory for Horton Plains National Park and World’s End visibility. Guided walk through cloud forest, grasslands and highland ecosystems to World’s End and Baker’s Falls. Return to the tea country for afternoon rest, fireplace tea or slow estate relaxation. Overnight in Hatton or Nuwara Eliya region.

Tea Country to Galle

Tea country to Galle, approximately 5 to 5.5 hrs. Long but scenic travel day from the highlands to the south coast, departing Hatton by 7.30am. Plan a coffee stop around Ratnapura, lunch at a suitable coastal or southern town, and arrival in Galle by around 3.30 to 4pm. Brief guests clearly in advance that this is the longest single drive of the package. Sunset walk along the ramparts and dinner inside the fort. Overnight in Galle.

Galle Fort and Southern Heritage

Galle Fort and southern heritage. Morning guided walk through Galle Fort’s lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, old merchant houses, boutique lanes, galleries and ramparts. Afternoon optional visit to Unawatuna, Japanese Peace Pagoda, Koggala Lake or a turtle conservation centre. Overnight in Galle.

Galle to Bentota

Galle to Bentota, approximately 1.5 hrs. Relaxed drive along the southwest coast toward Bentota. Afternoon Madu River mangrove safari, Brief Garden visit or resort leisure by the beach. From May to October, brief guests that the west coast sea can be rough and consider Pasikudah or simply extending Galle to 2 nights instead of a beach-led Bentota stay. Evening refined coastal dinner. Overnight in Bentota.

Bentota to Colombo – Departure

Bentota to Colombo departure, approximately 2 hrs. Final beach morning or optional Colombo shopping stop. Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for departure.

Practical Notes

  • A strong November-to-April heritage and wildlife route. Wilpattu access should be checked during heavy monsoon periods, and the Hatton-to-Galle transfer should be clearly briefed as a long driving day.
